This sweeping panorama was taken just after a September snow on the east side of Independence Pass. You can see the highway way down below, and back of 14,433 foot Mount Elbert, Colorado's highest mountain. The pass is named for the mining town of Independence on the west side of the pass. Some people mistakenly think it gets its name from not being open until around July 4th of each year. The pass is too steep and too dangerous to keep open year round. It connects Aspen, and the Roaring Fork Valley with Leadville and Buena Vista and the Arkansas Valley.
