I am having a serious Bear problem, 33 years I ve been up
here and never, now all a sudden bear going after baby cria (llama), mom slashed up. trash gone thru, I put ammonia, pinesol on anything
old food, dead rodents everything. He goes after llama again and he's a dead bear, okayed with DOW. He gave me special bullets. I think some people that have moved from city are creating some of the problems. Sorry to rant, but this will be last one (cria)baby I'll ever have and she is special. I got rid of goats to avoid this problem.

they are all put in at night, right? was the bear around during day?

The Costco on Santa Fe had a trustworthy model for sale a few months ago.

Wow thanks for the tips! We keep our trash/recycling in our shed, which has a finger-bolted 2x4 across the doors thanks to my executive chef father-in-law's tempting treats one year (the old latch was flimsy, so no surprise.) Anyway, I have been scratching my head for a few years - where can we put the trash and recycling where wildlife cant get in that's not in the shed.? Cuz those things take up the entire open floor, rendering it extremely difficult to use! I had the idea to use corrugated steel panels set on a 2x4 frame and re-bar it into the ground, but if I could add the extra protection of the cans themselves.... AWESOME! In 10 years we have had exactly one bear/trash encounter, but that is enough for me. I got spooked after multiple bear talks in Alaska...

It looks like it withstands the efforts of the bears but also looks like unless you have it anchored down someplace the bears can and will drag it away. Maybe into the road where it would be a hazard.

We use the regular can provided by my the trash company, are careful about when we put out our trash and freeze edibles and don't put them into the can until trash day. We have had one bear incident in all our years here by living consciously with wildlife. So I don't need to spend that kind of money.

Here is the one I made a few years back
Worked awesome, no bear ever ripped it open.
Just get a flat plywood board and bolt the top to it, and then latch it to the sides.
Cost $10.00

But then mountain view decided that the extra (2)lbs of wood was too heavy for the hydraulic arm to lift :bash:
So after the trash guy ripped it all off, I left the trash all over the road for him to clean up every week.

We have installed this on our trash can enclosure, and it seems to have worked. A bear triggered it once, and then it hasn't been approached since. http://www.homedepot.com/p/HomeBrite-So ... /202543950
