Post subject:  Tiny little flies

We have tiny little black flies in the house. They are attracted to light at night. They remind me of fruit flies or gnats but they only hang out around the lights and on the window panes nearby. I really want them to go away. What do I do??

i had that problem last year, but the light they went to has a ceiling fan attached - so i'd just turn on the fan!

good luck!

They are probably fungus gnats. We have them, too... had them last year as well. We got nematodes to put down and they stopped them for a while, but then it got cold enough to seemingly kill the nematodes, but not the fungus gnats. They're a problem again because like last year we've had so much moisture.

I have to vacuum them off the ceiling every night. :| It's annoying, and we're going to try to replace my office screen with a finer mesh to keep them out, and we're going to get the nematodes again. But barring that I have no great solutions. :(

Would the alcohol-in-a-spray-bottle trick work on them?

I use Raid Window Fly Traps. Sticky, 3x8 inch sheet that you apply to the window. A package of 4 is around $2 at Walmart.

I've been using the alcohol spray and have killed more than 200! But every morning and every night when I go to bed there are dozens more flying/walking around. I would like to find a more benign method. I will try the Raid window traps as soon as I can get them. I also have a bowl of water with dish soap in it sitting on the window sill, as suggested by another pinecammer. Flies not interested.

There are just so MANY! They creep me out.

I know the feeling! I've vacuumed them off the ceiling also, but since I started using the window traps I haven't really had to. I do have the traps on several windows in my home. I put them up at the top and bottom of the window; which is where the gnats usually go. They tend to live in the dirt of house plants also. I cut some of the strips in half and put them near the base of the plants. You'll be amazed at how many you catch. Good luck!

I know this post was years ago, wondering if anyone is having them now? If so what are you doing to get rid of them? Since I’ve seen this in past threads (like this one) was wondering if anyone can tell me if they eventually go away on their own/die off for good?

It depends on what brought them inside your house and what is there to keep them around.

Fungus gnats are normally found in decomposing materials such as compost, manure, and dirt. I was plagued with these many years ago after bringing outdoor pots of herbs indoors for the winter. They lay eggs in dirt and compost. Look around and find the potential source, a composter, worm bin, etc. and get rid of it or move it away from your house.

You can kill them with bacillus thuringiensis, an organic pesticide. After removing the herb plants, I treated all of my house plants for a period of time with Mesquito Bits. I eventually got rid of the gnats and no longer bring outdoor plants inside. Haven't had a problem since.
