Last week I attended a lecture on Ute Culturally Modified Trees. Here's a great video on the trees:

I was hiking at Meyer Ranch the day after and, amidst the old, old trees sadly cut down by XCel for the utility corridor, I noticed what looks like a Ute Prophecy tree. The image on the left is from the video above at about 12:50. The other is the image I took at Meyer Ranch OSP.

I sent the Meyer Ranch image to John Anderson who gave the lecture I attended and he thinks it might be a Ute Prophecy tree. I also sent the image above to JeffCo parks to alert them to a) not let XCel cut down the tree and b) to see if they can verify this is a Ute Prophecy tree.

What do you think, could the Meyer Ranch tree be a Ute Prophecy Tree?

There are less then a dozen known Ute Prophecy trees in Colorado so, if this is one, it's fairly rare and would be a very special sight at Meyer Ranch OSP.

Fascinating! Do you have a link to the video? I "need a plugin" and can't see it.

Very interesting and intriguing. I love the music along with the video. The burl is a fascinating feature on the Ponderosa as I thought only Redwood Trees were known to have burls.

Your timing could not be better as the Morrison Powwow is this weekend at the Fort.

Thank you very much for sharing this video. That was very kind of you.

Thanks everyone, I find this subject fascinating also. :)

On the way up the trails at Meyer Ranch near the top, I saw a bent tree that looked like it had a ligature mark. Next time I hike there, I'll try not to be too tired to take a picture - if I can find the tree again.

I really hope JeffCo parks decides to do a complete CMT survey of Meyer Ranch OSP to see if there are any Ute CMT trees (CMT is what you see everywhere for Culturally Modified Trees). Wouldn't it be wonderful if we found there was a rich Ute history right in our area!!

And at Flying J OSP, right along the trail is a bent tree in the right shape for a CMT. I didn't stop to see if there were any ligature marks but will next time I hike there.

We all need to keep our eyes peeled for CMTs in our area.

How can I locate the book, "Ute Indian Prayer Trees of the Pikes Peak Region" by John Westley Anderson?

Thanks in advance.

According to Mr. Anderson's website, you can buy the book at the Old Colorado City Historical Society & History Center. I don't see a link on that website so I guess you would have to call them or go down there.

Here is a link to the order form Mr. Anderson handed out at the lecture. I uploaded it as a PDF file.

Also, Mr. Anderson has events where he will be speaking on his website. He does sell the books at his lectures. He is a former El Paso County Sheriff and lives down there and give most of his lectures there.

Mr. Anderson is writing a second book where he will have Ute CMTs located by Colorado county. Wouldn't it be something if the Meyer Ranch tree does turn out to be a Ute Prophecy Tree and he includes it in his new book!

What a fantastic find at Meyers!!! Even if it can not be verified as a Ute CMT, it is a special tree indeed and needs to be preserved. Thanks for your efforts in that regard.

Thanks for this post!
