Now, I know many of you have been to the McGraw Memorial Park in Bailey, but do you actually know who Helen was? Perhaps this little bit of history will lead you to a better appreciation of the Park the next time you visit.

I had the great pleasure and honor of knowing Helen. She was my dad's teacher for a time at the Long Meadow School. She talks specifically about him in the part of the film where the school kids are putting out a grass fire sparked by the train.

In the early/mid fifties, when she was adding the audio, she showed the train film to a small group at my grandparents' home at Santa Maria. I clearly remember laying on the floor under the dining room table, watching the film and listening to Helen's narration. One of the purposes of that gathering was to surreptitiously record Jess Fitzsimmons talking about his cattle operations. He had been reticent to talk into a recorder about it, so Helen and my grandmother hid the tape recorder next to a chair in the living room and made sure he sat in that chair. When that part of the film came on, we all asked him a lot of questions. My grandfather is in the film during that part.

Helen once gave my family (dad and Grandma had already passed) a personal screening of the film when we showed up one day in the mid-eighties at McGraw Park so our kids could see it. She was a wonderful person and a true delight to have known.

Thanks for that bit of personal recollection. We really appreciate it!

Are there others who wish to recall their memories of Helen?
