I could post a whole book about the history of this place. I am putting it all together in hopes of doing an historical tour sometime this spring. Here's the quick highlights:

David Cassell came to the South Park area in 1867 and homesteaded at the current Santa Maria location in 1872. By 1880, he had a flourishing hotel/resort established. The building shown in theses pictures was constructed in the winter of 1905-06 after the previous hotel burned. The land was sold to John and Mary Dower in 1929 and converted to a summer camp for underprivileged kids. It was operated continuously by Catholic Charities until 2003. It will reopen this summer under the operation of the Boulder Valley YMCA. The hotel in these pictures served as the camp dormitory until 1970, when it was demolished and replaced by cabins out in the grove. Unfortunately, very little of the old Cassells still exists.
