All,

I stumbled across an interesting (to me anyway) document "Colorado Mining Fatalities 1844-1981" and have added it to the PCHS Resources page at.

It is a large document (89 pages, 4.2mb) packed with interesting data:

What is interesting?:

The broad range of nationalities.....but, not a single Chinese. (possibly not reported due to lack of significance.)
The age and occupations of the miners
The manner of their death.....this was indeed a dangerous occupation, even late into the 1900s.

I would like this document in excel so I could sort the data. Unfortunately, it is a PDF - but still searchable.

Jim.

PS: If anyone has the means to export this PDF into Excel, let me know.

The attached file opens in Numbers for me so it should (may?) open in Excel for you.

This topic brings back a memory of my paternal Grandfather. He immigrated from the Ukraine and worked in the Pennsylvania coal mines. There was an accident and a live electrical cable came down on his back and burned him something terrible. When I knew him as an old man, he still had the scars from that cable crisscrossing on his back. You could see the roundish indentations with the cross marks that a cable has.

And he was just laid off, no compensation or anything. He did move to South Plainfield in NJ and bought a land parcel that would later become valuable.

But this tragedy has a good ending, his son, my father, met my mother in church as she played the organ on a Sunday. And so here I am...

Thank you so much!!

I tried six ways Sunday to export this PDF but with no success. Good job! A spead sheet makes the file so much more useable.

And, so you know, you converted from PDF to Excel I converted Excel to Numbers (Mac file)

Thanks again.

Jim.

Where did you find this list? It is very interesting, although not complete: one of my great uncles died in a mine in cripple creek in 1911, and he is not on the list.

word will load it as a table, which can be edited and searched

I am not surprised the list is incomplete.
