Additional photos have been posted on the Park County Archives site, including the earliest known photos of Cassells/Santa Maria from 1898, the Como area, and especially of interest to NHillBilly, Chase/Weller (the Weller hotel is shown in an old post card).

A couple new photos of the statue (new to this site - they're actually old photos):

Postcard looking up from the base:

The face and right hand during construction (1932):

L-R, My grandfather, Edward Bell, my great-grandfather, John A. Bell (he was the contractor for the transition of Cassells into Santa Maria and erection of the statue), and my great-uncle, Ambrose Bell, at the base of the statue during construction (1932):

The photo of the hand and face really illustrate the scale of the statue. It was erected without any powered equipment like cranes, hoists, etc. Each of the 300 pieces was lifted into place in a wheelbarrow using a manual pulley system. In other words, the face was lifted 60 feet into the air by hand to be set in place.

I really was shocked by the size of the hand, I know that sounds silly, but it's alot bigger than I thought it would be.

Until you've actually been up to the statue, it is very difficult to judge the scale.
