Conquistador Ski Area is the ski area you see in the Westcliffe area. It's closed.

Among the financial problems....the hill was always icy and difficult to ski.

The Hermit Basin is a Conference Center and Resort houses in the old lodge and has been remodelled/expanded. The Center offers outdoor ice skating, broom hockey, inner tubking, snow shoeing, and cross country.

Hermit was founded by the same gentleman who started Horn Creek Conference Center in the same area.

Conquistador was originally developed and owned by Dick Milstein. He also owned the area Sunlight. Dick was a great man who was a model for introducing and training young kids how to ski. I knew his daughter Charme from the late 60's and 70's at Monarch (Ridgewalker, maybe you remember them too). Charme was dating my best friend Keith Rush when he was killed in an avalance on Monarch Pass in the early 70's. We were on the rescue team. A subsequent owner, Mund Shaikly, as I recall, was unfortunately killed in a helicopter ski accident in the early 90's. Just ask my left knee about the icy conditions at the area...

The locals in Westcliffe claim that the problem with Conquistador was that the snow would all get blown to Kansas.

We drove by Conquistador today during a little day trip. Its now a Christian Retreat and there is one tow on the surface for a 1200' Tubing run. Skiing is discouraged and no chairs exist here. The locals really didn't want it anyway. but they sure book the retreat for their town gatherings.

(Curiously, all the trails still exist and Google maps confirms the entire route map today matches their published route map, meaning, the forest hasn't taken over in 20 years of idle time. Hmmmmm.)
