We had a surprise visitor here yesterday and I was barely able to catch a shot!

This is a female Red Crossbill on our tray feeder on the south side of our house.

Not much of a photo - but it is what I got!

I'm keeping my camera close for when the male shows up!

Here is a follow-up on the Red Crossbills!

Today we had two male Red Crossbills on the tray feeder.

Sure enough - the Crossbills get "Photo-bombed" by Pine Siskins!

They really are that orange!

Enjoy!

Love the Crossbills, I usually get a few at our feeder!

BGR, do you have any crummy fox squirrels try to get at your feeders? If not, I would love to know what to do to keep them from sucking up all our bird seed!

Or, if anyone else out there has suggestions.....

We have a feeder hanging off a high pole with a squirrel baffle that keeps them away but would like to try some other types of feeders.

Wow how do you get all these amazing birds! Question, will all birds eat black safflower? I always get the mixed stuff which they all eat and goes quick. I was only able to get a big bag of black safflower this time and hope they all eat it. Thanks

We feed almost exclusively black sunflower - and might add cracked corn in small portions when the Bandtail Pigeons come back for the summer.
That is the best way to attract the Grosbeaks.
The Evening Grosbeaks are here now but you might see Pine, Black-headed and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks from time to time.

We also keep a Nyjer Thistle feeder hanging out year around for the finches.
It is fairly expensive but the consumption rate is low and you might get to see Goldfinches when they pass through.

We keep one or two "suet feeders" hanging out in a tree that is a (we hope) a "stretch reach" for bears to pull down.
Those might go into storage in the heat of the summer.
Suet cakes are often on sale at Moore Lumber Ace Hardware.

We think that bags of assorted "bird seed mix" are a waste of time and seed for our mountain birds.

We usually buy our sunflower seed and cracked corn at Big R in Conifer - and we do it on their "Veteran Discount" days.

Our mountain birds can be a great compliment to the views we take for granted!

Will the Juncos, white breasted nuthatch and chickadees eat the black sunflower?

Along with those birds listed above, feeding black sunflower will also feed:
Pygmy/White-breasted nuthatches
House finches
Cassien's Finches
Pine Siskins
Rosy Finches
Juncos
Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers
White/Gold Crowned Sparrows
Band-tailed Pigeons
Mourning Doves
and many others.
Keep you eyes peeled and you may be surprised!

That's great. I've been feeding the birds I mentioned. I just didn't want to lose them by switching to all black sunflower. Thanks!
