Only half of the brain sleeping? That is amazing and interesting. As for the Jay screetching like a hawk, there was one at my place too last year, he did clear the feeders! Smart bird, have not seen him this year but took down all feeders soon as winter departed. Hated to do it but mice built a nest in my fan area of car. $200 to have mechanic clear it out. Too bad mice come when I feed birds :(

Yes. I once saw my ducks resting in a line. I thought they were all asleep since from my vantage point all eyes were closed. As I walked on I saw that the eye on the end duck was open. I walked back and forth and both end ducks had their outside eye open. I've never read anything about this.

Ok, the first time I heard a crow say, "Hello Hello!", I thought I'd lost my mind. Thank goodness Pinecammers verified it....with proof even! Sooooooo, this morning I took the dog for a walk and it was really quiet until a crow started squawking. He/she was sitting on the very top of a tree about 50 feet ahead of us, so I could see it clearly. It cawed a few more times, then perfectly timed and with perfect pitch, it cawed out the tune to "Shave and a haircut, 2 bits"!!! It cawed a few more times then flew of. I swear, I need to wear a go-pro at all times for proof of the crazy things I see and hear up here!!!!! This is at the top of Black Mountain. I would love to know if anyone else has heard him/her, and better yet, who is teaching them and how the heck are they doing it??? It's hilarious!

I play with the "Hello" crows when they come to visit. I can mimic the tone of thier voices and say "hello" back to them so I can sound like another crow. They will sometimes fly into the trees next to my house and there we will be saying "hello" back and forth. I think it is cool to be able to interact with my feathered friends.

i do the same thing! Anytime there are crows around, I yell HELLO in "their" voice and most of the time, someone answers back. I love it, too. I always smile to myself.

I do it too! I just can't help getting a kick out of any critter that chooses to interact with us for no reason other than just fun. (No touching, no food rewards, etc.) It feels like they're playing with us, I can almost imagine one crow telling another, "Watch this, I can make the human talk"! Ha! This one singing "Shave and a haircut" really cracked me up. That was just a total shock, but I could see his body move with each crow, so I had to believe what I was hearing. It made my day!
