I've been chasing this one around for the past two months and finally managed to get a shot off. I saw it fly overhead a couple of weeks ago and honestly, I thought it was a Pterodactyl.

Very nice! They land on our creek but are so skittish I can't get close enough for a pic. And the brush is so thick you can't see thru it. Naturally, I see them all the time along the river, out in the open where a great picture would be easy...as I'm driving by with no place to pull over.

Wonderful picture, thank you and yes, flying over and low they are huge! Wily is right. I was hiking past pond and one flew up into the pines. For a minute fright took over mind as I jumped off the path. Then watching it fold those wings as the branch rocked side to side- impressive!

The first one I ever saw was in Half Moon Bay, CA. I could not believe how huge they are.

Your pic is really great and one can see all the beautiful details of the bird. Your patience paid off.

If you hurry, you could enter the Seasons of Our Mountains calendar contest through the Mount Evans Home Health Care and Hospice and Conifer Chamber. The deadline is tomorrow.

Several years ago I was taking a nephew for a walk when he spotted what he said were "herring tracks." I wasn't sure how to respond since this kid does have an odd sense of humor so I simply asked how a herring could leave tracks in the mud. He was genuinely hurt by my question and responded that "grampa" (my father) had told him there were "great blue herrings" in the area.
