We are having caterpillars literally raining down from our Douglas Fir trees (not the Tussock moth like a couple of years ago). They seem to be attached to a sort of webbing like spiders cast and are about 1/2 to 3/4 inch. Any ideas?

They are Spruce budworm. if they infest a tree for 3 years, tree can die.

how do you know with confidence that they are spruce budworm?
i believe there are so many different kinds of caterpillers; a pic of the caterpillars be helpful in identifying them - can you get a pic?

My wife will post photos when her camera recharges. We have researched and the info points to the Western Spruce Budworm. This is really bad news for us because it means the potential loss of a lot of trees on our property and those of our neighbors. We intend to inform them about the issue.
