It has been a great week for birds around our place in Deer Creek Valley. Dozens of Pine Siskins are here with their new babies. As are many Evening Grosbeaks, newly returned to the feeders with their fledglings. Our regular nesting Black-headed Grosbeaks have offspring here, too. Northern flickers are here with young, along with Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers.

Then the Stellars Jays have come back from their summer digs along with a beautiful Clark's Nutcracker (I call him Clark Kent). There is a new male Casein's Finch. They have joined a flock of less welcome Grackles hammering on the feeders. The Band-tailed Pigeons are still here plundering the sunflower seeds on the hill.

Nice time to be alive in the mountains! Maybe a Western Tanager will find the feeder, too!!

I have magpies and their shrieking children and lots of robins feasting on worms after the rains drench the black top driveway.

Have you ever listened to one begging, pleading for food for hours on end with a migraine?! I've gained a lot of respect for crows after reading about their intelligence.

Mrs. BGR, you guys must live in the ideal place and provide the ideal food to attract so many desirable birds! This isn't the first time I've envied you. :D

Here is a Clark's Nutcracker sight we have seldom seen!
Image
We think that is Mom feeding her baby - who is sitting above her and SQUAWKING its beak off!
Truth is that the baby demonstrated it was quite able to peck at the suet after Mom flew a few feet away to scrape her suet filled beak on an aspen twig!

Lucky sighting!

I've never seen one up here. Are they also known as "camp robbers"? If so, then I've seen many in RMNP. They are pretty assertive in letting you know they want food from you.

I've heard them called Camp Robbers but mostly I hear Canadian Jays referred to as Camp Robbers. Haven't seen one of those here for awhile.

Oh, that's right. They have a dark cap on the back of their heads.

Here are three more birds here this week!

The "trophy" for the week is an American Goldfinch - the FIRST fully colored male we have seen this year!
Image
He was here and then gone...
Hope we get another look soon!

This is a male Red Crossbill.
Image
We are seeing Crossbills regularly and they are bringing their newly fledged babies!
The youngster's bills are not yet crossed so they have trouble cracking the black oil sunflower seeds!

And, of course, we have lots of Evening Grosbeaks!
Image
They, also, are bringing lots of newly fledged babies who are doing a lot of begging from whichever parent is with them!

We are keeping our eyes peeled for new arrivals so come back now and then to see what is new!
