During the summer you can almost always see White-crowned Sparrows near Summit Lake on Mt. Evans. That's how I knew that they nested at/above timberline.

Early morning and taken with my phone, this is as clean as I could make it, but I had to get a pic! First time in 11 years on this property that I've seen an Evening Grosbeak! :multi: And he's sharing the feeder with a Black-headed Grosbeak. Too cool! Hopefully he comes back and I can get a better shot with better light.

Thank you! I couldn't tell what it was at first, thought it was just a Black-headed Grossbeak with some recessive genetic mutation. He stayed on the feeder for several minutes and as it got lighter out I realized just how different he was. I really hope to see him in the sunshine (and his mate assuming she's around.) Here's a pic from allaboutbirds.org:

And a female:

Little better pic, male and female Evening Grosbeaks, and you can just make out the head of the Tanager on the suet feeder behind them. :)

Phone wouldn't quite focus, I'll get them outside with the good camera eventually. Hope they come back yearly.

The Swallows appeared on Saturday. They ususally make their annual appearance any where between Memoral Day weekend and the first week of June.

We got that first Tanager on 5-15, hadn't seen any more until Saturday when five males showed up all together. I assume the females got here at the same time, but we didn't see them until yesterday. They are going through the suet!

You are so lucky to have the Western Tanagers; they are simply stunning. For those of you who haven't been fortunate enough to have them at your house, suet seems to be the magic trick you need. Good luck!

Some guy on FB gets the most amazing pictures of these beauties. He halves oranges and hangs them up. The birds LOVE them.

Another first for this property, and another hurried phone pic. Brown-headed Cowbirds are definitely not canyon dwellers, preferring open areas, surprised to see him here. He didn't touch the feeders, just stopped by for about a minute and shot through.

I was very surprised to see a few Western Tanagers at the Nutsie food log this morning. They are beautiful birds who I've not seen here before on top of the mountain. It was only 24 degrees when they were here and I received about 1 1/2 inches of snow last night; so they seemed "out of place" weather wise. They stayed and ate the nuts and berries from the food log then left when the Clark Nutcrackers chased them away. Oh well, they know food is here. I am hoping they return.
