1) Tansy/Sticky Aster = Machaeranthera ssp.
2) Mountain Ball Cactus = Pediocactus simpsonii (smells wonderful when a fresh blossom!)
3) Yep--Wild Iris = Iris missouriensis
4) Shooting Stars = Dodecatheon pulchellum

Most are done blooming now. Makes me sad summer is over :(

Here is a flower that really had me thrown this morning. Some of you will recognize it immediately. I spent two hours searching under scientific descriptors like "tentacles", "weird", "creepy", "extra-terrestrial", etc., and finally happened on it. It really is freaky and beautiful!

Scientific Name: Coriflora hirsutissima
Derivation: hirsutissima - very hairy.
Synonyms: Clematis hirsutissima
Family: Buttercup - Ranunculaceae

Ooh, that's cool, too! My sources say it's something else: the seed head of a Pasque flower. I was really taken by its uniqueness.

Ah-ha. So you would need to look at the plant's leaves. Totally different for each of those plants. Extremely fuzzy on Paque flower. Not so on the sugarbowl leaves. When people send me photos of wildflowers to ID, I always remind them to get the leaves in there too:)
