The Broadtail is happily feeding when the Rufus comes along and there is a stand-off

Image

The Rufus fans its tail to make it look larger and more fierce

Image

The Broadtail hightails (pardon the pun) it, leaving the Rufus victorious

Moral of the story, the Rufus is a bully. Make sure you have more than one feeder out there so other hummers can feed.

Thanks for posting. The exact same thing is happening at my place. I thought I had read something previous about it and now I do not need to do further research, plus I have fantastic pictures to boot!

Beautiful images. However, having two hummingbird feeders doesn't always work. I have two, about 25 feet apart, and our local Rufus presides over both. I've read that the feeders must be out of sight of each other to keep a Rufus from stopping other hummingbirds from feeding at both.

I have two feeders about 60 feet apart with a house in-between. I think each has its own bronze bomber.

Lucky you. Last year we had 2 Rufus hummingbirds that battled each other all the time. This allowed the other hummers to sneak in and feed.

Great point about the feeders being out of sight of each other Tillerbee. And, I now have a new name for the Rufus thanks to Bobcat.

We have a couple rufous and they don't seem any more territorial than the others. Took this picture the other day and we must have had 15 hummers all vying for a spot.

A city friend once asked us if the hummers had feet, hah.

p.s. A turkey pecked the yellow flower things off one of our hummer feeders, I wonder if you can get replacement ones?
