We were surprised to find this Sharp-shinned Hawk sitting in one of the aspen trees out one of our south facing windows this morning.
Image

It has been a few years since we have seen one of these beautiful birds in those trees.
Image

He was just enjoying the warm morning Sun and spent about 20 minutes preening.
Image

Sharp-shinned are the smallest of the "hawk" family although there are several smaller "falcons" occasionally seen here.
Image
He just gave us "the eye" for a while and then flew away!

We hope you get a chance to see one up this close some day!

Enjoy!

Surprisingly, I had a Cooper's sitting at my water dish a couple times. He was probably also waiting for breakfast. I have a plentiful crop of chipmunks, here (I love my chipmunks, too, but that's just the way it works).

Sharp-shinned hawks mainly eat small birds. They also eat small mammals and large insects. They often catch birds at bird feeders and take young birds from nests. When they catch birds, sharp-shinned hawks pluck the feathers before eating the bird
