It is still a little early for some Black Bears to go into hibernation. Pregnant female Black Bears are first to go into hibernation. They are most likely doing that now; finding dens, making dens and such. The latest I've seen a Black Bear has been Nov 11th.

Of course those who have not found enough food to sustain them for the entire winter will emerge from their dens and go searching for food. I've seen their paw prints (when there is snow on the ground of course) in the snow late Feb and thru March when they've passed by.

You realize Bears do not actually sleep the entire winter, eh? Black Bears are often awake in their dens, it is just that they are too tire to emerge (unless they are really hungry).
