Caught this cub around 6:00 PM. She's been coming around at night bust must be getting hungry and more brave as I haven't seen her during the day up until now.

When do they do into hibernation? We've been wanting to put out bird feeders this winter.

RockyRock:

Regarding Black Bears: Pregnant Sows are first to go into hibernation. I believe they go into hibernation anytime during October. I had a pregnant SOW who visited quite often last year. She "dissappeared" about the 3rd week of October. I was fortunate to see her after her emergence this past spring with a little one in tow. Haven't seen them all summer. Wished I could have watched the little one grow.

Regarding the remaining Black Bears, I've not seen any after Nov 15th. So anytime between now and then, it is safe to say they begin their hibernation.

Don't know if you are aware or not, but it is their slowed heart beat which makes them very tired and put them into hibernation. Their heartbeat slows down to 4 beats a minute. They don't sleep all winter long. Black Bears spend some of the time awake. And, if they have not found enough food to sustain them thru the long winter months, their hunger will cause them to emerge and come looking for food. I've seen their paw print in the snow during March, so I know someone was hungry and looking for food.

Hope this helps.

The cub looks like it is in good shape for the up coming hibernation. It is a beautiful cub.

May the Great Spirit bless and protect it and its Mama and grant then a long and healthy, happy life....

had one on my deck sunday morning - after some snow was on the deck - knocked over some things (my usual sign) and also left some clear footprints before arousing my pups, which gets me to the door

Wonderful photos of one incredibly beautiful bear! Thanks for posting! We haven't seen as many as we usually do this year. From what I have heard over the years Rockyrock, is that the bears normally go into hibernation by Thanksgiving.
