Saw this fat little dude diving into my pond and pulling out what appears to be worms in pods. He dives down, jumps back up onto the ice and shakes the worm until the pod falls off. I have a video, but no idea how to post it ! Those things all over the ice are the little pod tubes.

Those pods might be from caddisfly larvae. If you look at them and see tiny bits of sand and tiny little Pebbles that's what the larva makes to live in. Cool!

too late! They are now covered in a layer of snow, and I'm not eager to walk out on the ice in these temps. I'll leave the "polar plunge" activity to our little friend.

I'm with calypso4evr, caddis larvae. Added a pic that might help identify the species,in case your interested. They will use any material available to build ther case. Once while fishing, saw a shallows just covered with cases built of mica chips. They looked like tiny jewels in the sunshine.

Looks reasonable to me. Zooming in on my hi-def versions of the photos, a couple of those items look pretty close. Funny bird for sure. When he dives in, he's under there for a decent amount of time, so I'm guessing he pulls them out of the mud
