A woodpecker has created a large hole in the side of my house and the rains are coming! It's on the second story and I can't climb a ladder. It should take less than 5 minutes to hammer a birdhouse into place to cover the hole, but I need to find someone with a ladder big enough to reach that high, plus the ladder needs to balance on a slope. I don't have any family to help with this, and my friends all either moved away or slept with my ex husband.

(p.s. I can pay $20 for your trouble)

Woodpeckers create holes in the house siding to build nests. It's spring! There are probably young birds in the nest right now. All woodpeckers are also protected so you aren't allowed to disturb the nest once eggs are layed. Don't get into trouble with the Fish and Wildlife guys (Federal law enforcement, not state). Also, if you do block a nest that is full of fledglings, now you have a horrible dead animal odor to deal with. Don't create a worse situation then you already have.

Good point AMRE2ME, I don't want to harm any eggs or birds. I'm not sure there are eggs involved yet though. I can't see into the hole to tell, but according to the department of environmental protection, "In spring, males drum on trees (as well as on metal eaves and gutters, house siding, poles, and trash cans) to announce their territory and attract a mate."

The drumming is still happening, so maybe he's still looking for romance? If yes, I'd like to replace his love nest with a birdhouse asap. If it's too risky I'll accept waiting until eggs hatch and birds fly off, which takes about 5 weeks total. Ugh. I'm hoping I don't see a bird poke it's head into my dining room in the mean time.

Wowza- Thank you Stecat and Assistant for patching the hole! This is such a huge relief!

P.S. Pinecammers- no eggs had been laid yet- Stecat made sure first.
