We are dogless, and it's miserable. The house in unbearably empty. I've been searching Pet Harbor, Adopt-a-pet, Pet Finder, IMHS, EAPL, 2Blonds All Breed Rescue, and any small agencies I come across. We've been to two adoption events. They mostly have puppies.

We are looking to adopt:

a female, large, (but laid back), young or adult (we will be taking in senior dogs in the future)

Laid back (despite their size or breed), able to fit in with a quiet environment
Not shy, but trustworthy with strangers we are friendly to and in public

Large, but not a giant breed

    Very intelligent

Not a fence-jumper (our fence is 48" high)

Lab - golden or dark yellow or mixes
German Shepherd - not black, not very dark or mixes
    Golden Retriever?? or mixes

And for Steve, a very special Boxer, but, again, laid back and more quiet that normal (he insists this is impossible - lol).

Are there other large breeds we could look for that can be mellow?

I know such a dog(s) must exist. Maybe one of you know of one? Or if you come across one please keep us in mind. Thanks! :D

Here's a couple of ideas.
http://bigdogshugepaws.com - some of the Pyre mixes are smaller. I have a Pyre/lab mix female who is a total sweetheart! We adopted her through Clear Creek Animal Shelter (before it was Charlie's Place).

www.charliesplaceshelter.org (Clear Creek/Gilpin County Animal Control Shelter)

There's quite a few boxer rescue websites.

How exciting to be adopting a new dog! I hope you find someone to love, and to love you!

I will ask Jeracha Duff she works with a wonderful rescue and she may even have a foster now. She is a Vet Tech at Crow Hill Vet.

If she thinks she might have a fit I will get her number and PM you.

Go to Springerrescue.org...a wonderful rescue organization. Springers are the most wonderful dogs and sounds like the perfect one for you.

Hobocare Boxer Rescue has been around a very long time and indeed does a great job. You could also contact Golden Retriever Rescue of the Rockies ( GRRR) for a Golden. Dogs from breed specific rescue groups are almost always vetted so they can actually tell you quite a bit about a specific dog.

We looked at them and like them a lot, but they require a 6' fence, ours is only 4'.

When I got Kiana, though, it was from a Siberian Husky rescue which required 6'. When the woman came out to see my home, she didn't have any problem with it being shorter. So maybe they make exceptions if the home is right in every other way.

I'll go back to them and look more closely.

A friend of mine volunteers for GRRR and I was surprised how many applicants they have versus the number of Goldens they have available. If you're willing to adopt a mixed breed, I think your chances are better. I'll give her a call to see what your chances might be.

I rescued my last boxer from My Second Home Rescue (https://www.mysecondhomerescue.org/). I lost that boxer last July and am now fostering a boxer mix for MSHR. And she is so awesome that I am likely going to hold on to her! But check out their website and feel free to reach out to them. You can say that you were referred by Summer since they know me. When I adopted my first boxer through them, I had a laundry list of requirements (no barking, house-trained, got along with dogs and people, etc.) and they found me the perfect dog. They are upfront and honest about each dog's pros and cons. They are wonderful to work with.

This might sound crazy but you might consider an older German Shorthaired Pointer. I work with rescue at milehighgsp.org. While the young are a handful the older (aka experienced) are really mellow and great family pets. They all are sweet cuddles but the older ones are less boisterous!
