What is the rule on using charcoal? I seem to remember during the fires we suffered through in the early 2000s that charcoal burning grills were prohibited, a recent review of the Jeffco Fire Ban definitions is not so clear. Does anybody know if the use of charcoal grills is permitted during a fire ban? Thanks.

The Park County burn ban issued today prohibits:

1. Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire or campfire, including charcoal.

Thanks for the responses, I guess I didn't read the restrictions close enough. So I have a follow up: During a fire ban should the sale of charcoal and charcoal starter be prohibited as well. Every summer when I see the big displays for this stuff I get all kinds of angry.
When I moved to this area in 1998 I brought with me a Weber kettle that we swore was the only way yo cook outdoors. After a couple of fire bans we reluctantly got rid of the Weber. Close to 20 years later we are 100% satisfied with cooking with gas. I often hear people say that it's just not the same but I gotta say that for my family, that's just not the case.

eddie6string, we switched to a wood pellet grill/smoker. It's all self contained, no chance for sparks. It meets the "no open flame" restriction. It's a lovely compromise between charcoal and gas.

Probably not true arson by the legal definition but rather - stupidity.
It's not very brilliant to build a huge sparking bonfire in a dry area during a well publicized fire ban.
It's not very brilliant to have a campfire, douse the apparent flames and leave it to go back home to wherever while the coals continue to burn and spark.
It's not very brilliant to flip live burning cigarette stubs out the car window into dry grass along the road.
It's not very brilliant to just give a verbal warning to people like the above, there should be con$equence$ to get their attention - big fines.

"I hope there were some fines levied for these irresponsible idiots."

During a extremely dry summer not too long ago,the sheriff ordered a fire ban and attempted to emphasize the seriousness by imposing a $1,000 fine for all illegal burning. Enforcement resulted in increased patrols, including deputies extra time away from normal duties to patrol multiple remote areas, not to mention additional vehicle expense. The sheriff did his job and deputies did their jobs by conducting extensive patrols, issuing tickets with hefty fines but when it came time for the offenders day in court, the presiding judge handed out what amounted to a slap on the wrist and significantly reduced the fines, therefore sending the happy campers on their way with a message, "this little ole' infraction was no big deal, so what if your negligence endangered our lives, businesses, homes and forests!" Go figure...

Is that judge still on the bench? If so what's his/her name? Time for unemployment!

Yes, I agree RkyMtnFool - this is when one votes to NOT keep a Judge on election day. Is there a way to find out the Judge's name?
