Got this email this morning:

Quote:
Increasingly, a small, but growing number of customers has been interpreting our guarantee well beyond its original intent. Some view it as a lifetime product replacement program, expecting refunds for heavily worn products used over many years. Others seek refunds for products that have been purchased through third parties, such as at yard sales.

Based on these experiences, we have updated our policy. Customers will have one year after purchasing an item to return it, accompanied by proof of purchase. After one year, we will work with our customers to reach a fair solution if a product is defective in any way.

This is a sad commentary but I understand where L.L.Bean is coming from. I have boots from them and they are completely worn out but I would never expect L.L.Bean to replace them at this point. I guess others are not as honest.

I LOVE LLBean and have been a lifelong customer of theirs for many decades. They have always been fair but I certainly understand this policy change.............there is always someone that pushes the rules and it ruins it for the rest of us!

I am surprised they didn't do this sooner. Having been in retail it is amazing what people expect to return. Even a year is a darn good
policy for something that has obviously been used. Still love LL Bean.

Love LL Beans gear and the slippers, we used to run into this same issue at REI with people using gear to the end of it's life and expecting full replacements.

I think the comments here show the loyalty to the brand regardless of warranty policy. that speaks volumes.

^^ Probably...and it's been well-earned over the years.

Chef-gal turned me on to LLB when we were dating but I haven't been a LLB customer for many years. Back when I purchased things from them regularly their shipping and returns were always free. I don't recall ever having a bad experience with them. I just moved on because most of the things I bought from them were either changed or discontinued. And there are, quite honestly, many other companies who offer the same value and quality merchandise at lower prices.

Like DP, I love their "house shoes" (chef-gal insists on calling them slippers...but she's a Yankee). But, they just got too expensive and now they're made in China like everything else.

I also have their robe and two flannel shirts that are the warmest I've ever seen. All gifts from Quiltermom.

When the company put out a news bulletin last year stating that this was being considered among the examples cited for this change were people who buy Christmas wreaths made from live branches were returning them because by February they had turned brown. [what]?

In years past (and I lived in Portland OR for 11 years, '72-83, Nordstrom would let you exchange shoes, no matter what... no questions. I am sure that they don't do that any more. I have been a loyal customer of LL Bean for 30+ years...although, the last few years, there is not much that I need from their catalog.
