Can anyone explain why it took soooo long to get home? I averaged 3-4 mph between King Sooper and Elk Creek Fire Station, where it goes down to one lane. I have lived up here for 16 years and never experienced such a drive, even in the very worst of weather. it wasn't snowing, it wasn't icy, and the roads weren't slick. What on earth happened!

I agree, that was crazy, and it seems to be getting worse every year. 30+ minutes from Foxton to the fire station for me. I didn't see any accident reports that would have affected that stretch of 285, so my guess is like Bobcat said, "population", too many people from warmer states who are terrified to drive in the winter, and the continued decline of driving skills which has been discussed many times on Pinecam.

I was on the bus last night stuck in all that traffic. I think two things contributed to the gridlock. First, CDOT posted on it's two big signs on 285 that the chain law was in effect, but failed to mention that the chain law took effect west of Bailey. So everyone driving freaked out and slowed down. Second, when we finally got through the gridlock and up to Pine Junction, there was an old Suburban driving 10 mph with its flashers on. Traffic backed up behind the Suburban and never cleared up - and that's all it took too make it a long, slow commute. If you can afford them, snow tires are the only way to drive 285 in the winter. Don't need them often, but when you do, they really come in handy.

Anytime it snows, there is a big backup as 285 goes from 2 lanes to 1 lane at Richmond Hill and then traffic goes very slow going down the hill to Kings Valley. Roads were snow packed last night, so it is inevitable. I always turn at Kennedy Gulch and come up Conifer Mountain Dr when it snows for this reason.

And the clueless Denver news people say "Hey, take 285 to the ski slopes." Can you imagine what that would be like?

I think many flatlanders already have begun using 285 for weekend skiing on a regular basis. Many folks I work with already talk about using 285 on weekends now instead of I-70.
