We have decided to start a thread where the Board can announce important news and updates to the members of Pinecam.

First we would like to announce the creation of a new forum found under the heading of Community Agencies. It is Elk Creek Fire Department which serves the area around Conifer and Pine Junction. We hope you will visit the forum.

Secondly, the Tech Team is working long hard hours toward our goal of updating the Pinecam software and to the eventual move to the new server. In order to do this we need to trim out many old threads and posts in order to reduce the massive size of our databases. We have started this process yet we are being careful to preserve important history within the site.

This process may decrease some members post count, and while we realize this is important to some members, it is necessary for the stability of the upgrade and eventual move.

We are excited for the upcoming new things and thank you for being patient, and especially thank you for being a Pinecam member.

The Pinecam Board of Directors

...as long as the voles are not disturbed... :vole:

Can you give us examples of "need to trim out many old threads and posts ".

What are you trimming and where is that information going and how is it being decided what is removed?

Ok, back to the serious stuff. Jo, the entire volunteer staff are deciding what needs to be trimmed, and we welcome member input as well as to what can go.

We are trimming all across the forums, especially the old posts back from 2004 forward to about 2010, and some newer ones as well. The posts we are trimming are being deleted completely. And, yes, the voles will be disturbed. :)

Again, the databases are massive for Pinecam making it very difficult to integrate into new software. We have posts spanning the past 10 years and when you look at some of them and there are 3 views :) it can probably be sacrificed.

Hope this answers your questions.

Understandable about something with three views, I am guessing it isn't worth saving.

If you are kidding about the voles, fine. If you aren't give us time to copy and paste the thread, yes I want the entire thread, or archive it somehow on our own.

I need to process this info. I frequently 'walk down memory lane' on the site and though I understand the issue of not being able to convert to the new software with this massive amount of data, it seems sad that what is pinecam, it's history, needs to be weeded and discarded.

Can't it be put someplace else?

Sending a PM with a suggestion.

Good information and input. The "word" games in the Basement can be trimmed significantly. You guys have probably already figured that one out.

There's a lot of great info in the Local History forum - I would hate to lose some of that.

Thanks for the input. The Local History forum will not be trimmed, as any other important information like that. We also have an inactive forum, out of view right now, which has photos people have posted of the area. This is being kept and will be placed back probably in the history forum under a new thread

You might notice the Basement has been pruned and should now only contain the last two years of posts.

Jo, I would copy the vole thread if you want it as it will be trimmed. We will wait in case anyone wants to copy things like this. Some topics and posts will include all posts for the past one, two or more years depending on what they are.

We will be very careful with History, Pet Corner, and places like those in order to preserve the important events such as the loss of a pet. They will stay.

Word games may be affected, but right now they are so huge that the system will not work on them. We have to figure this one out.

We are sure that everyone wants upgraded forum software with new bells and whistles going forward. Pinecam needs new software or one of these days it will crash and burn and then nothing will be preserved and the site would start all over.

This trimming has to be done, but again, we are being extremely careful. Except for History and things like that, really, who goes back and reads most of the posts from 2005? :)

Keep the suggestions coming and thanks for your input.

Since the word games are an issue - could posters start NEW topics with the word games and the old topics can be worked on?

"who goes back and reads most of the posts from 2005? Smile"

I don't read "most" of them, but I do read them from time to time and earlier. and I enjoy them, it's like a weird little local history book and there are a lot of laughs and insight in there.

"Some topics and posts will include all posts for the past one, two or more years depending on what they are. "

I also want to point out that we have some cherished lost members that haven't posted in years because they have died. One we do not know the fate of.
They were provocative, endearing, infuriating, insightful and beloved all at the same time.

All we have left of them are their posts. Because of pinecam and it's pages they are still here. But for how much longer...

Yes, please give us a little time on the culling.

that alone is mind-boggling! I know it has to be done - but I pity the folks having to go through each thread and decide it's merits - uu-eee!

and I know that if it doesn't get done, there is a good possibility of the whole system crashing and losing everything, so I really appreciate the effort you guys are doing -
