More garbage trucks catching fire as homeowners clean out clutter

DENVER (KDVR) — If you are doing some extra spring cleaning around the house during the stay-at-home or “safer at home” orders, be careful what you throw away.

Waste Management says it is seeing an uptick in garbage truck fires, likely due to more people tossing out hazardous materials.

Items like batteries, pool chemicals, paint thinner, lighter fluid and propane tanks can ignite or explode due to friction when they are smashed down in the back of the truck.

Staples takes all electronics for free, just drop by and head over to service desk on left hand side of store

Thanks Wily Fox. Will be extra careful as to what I thrown in garbage but since this came up I think getting rid of this stuff properly is not well known to most of us.
Maybe someone out there can help what do I do with:
Batteries
Old paint and thinners
Old prescription drugs
potentially hazardous chemicals /oils
Old electronics (OK staples. Thanks :)
Thanks. Great topic!

According to the DEA website, most Walgreens will take old prescriptions.
If you only have an inch or two of paint left in a can, you can leave it uncovered until it dries hard. Then it is no longer toxic and can be disposed of in the trash. If you have more than that, I believe (but double-check) that Habitat for Humanity will take it if it can still be used.

I bought a case of this powder (paint hardener) that you mix into paint cans to harden the paint. once it has hardened, it OK to put in trash.

EAS+Y is PLANNING a Spring Clean Recycle Day for June 6. Click on the link below for what they are hoping to accept. As with everything these days, the event is subject to cancellation if we are on a stay at home order or if it is not safe for the volunteers.

Be sure to check the site closer to June 6 to see if it's still on or if it's been rescheduled.
