Here we go for the Breckenridge International Snow Sculpture Championships - 2017.

This is one of the GREAT winter events in Breckenridge, Colorado!
Artists in sculpture are invited from Colorado and the world over to submit models or sketches for proposed art in snow.
2017 was blessed with 16 teams of artists whose ideas were accepted for this event.
The venue of the "sculpture garden" is the Riverfront Park on U.S, Hwy9 in the virtual center of town.

Here's what the "sculpture Garden" looks like as seen from a distant hill north of town.
Image

Snow for the event is trucked in from wherever in Summit County it might be available - and this year had TWICE the snow in years!
The snow is dumped into large forms to create a block of snow 10 feet by 10 feet by 12 feet high.
That snow is compacted in the forms by eager boots of Breckenridge volunteers!
Here is what the block looks like before any tools are turned loose - and - ONLY HAND TOOLS are permitted!

My plan is to present photos of most of the works as seen on Friday, the day before Saturday morning judging takes place.
Then I will show you what THAT particular work looks like as seen finished and under the color-changing LED lights all over the venue.

Our first view of Team USA-Vermont is titled: "(WHAT'S YOUR) SINE WAVE?"
Image
Under the lights it looks like this:

Are you getting the idea that this event just might be "eye candy" for a cold winter event?

The next sculpture is by Team Mongolia-Erdene, one of the great teams from that distant part of the globe.
This is titled: "WE ARE ONE FAMILY".
Image
...and - under the lights!
Image

Team Mexico comes from a much milder climate than Mongolia or China - but they seem to be here every year that we have been following this event.
This work is: "XIUHMOLPILLI - THE PREHISTORIC CENTURY".
Image
Sparkling under the lights...
Image

Team USA-Breckenridge brought a lot of smiles to the crowd with: "LIFE SAVER" honoring Ski Patrol Volunteers.
Image
With the lights on at night there was revealed a bit of sweet humor.
Image
Check the mice "testing" the contents of the dog's "Rescue Sauce" - gotta be sure it is the "right stuff!"

[Here is Team Germany presenting: "PROCESS OF ADAPTATION" explaining how we evolve longing for happiness and contentment.
Image
The changing lights really "drive" the imagination of this work!
Image

This is the first year we can remember Iceland at the ISSC.
Good work from this "cold" country - which might be milder than one would expect.
Image
Here it is with the "model" revealing what the finished product was going to like like under the lights.
Image
This work is titled: "ARTISTRY IN ICE" and was beautifully executed.

The GOLD MEDAL was awarded to Team China for one of the most dramatic sculptures ever seen at the ISSC!
This is entitled:"MERMAID" and is startling in just how delicate the sculpting was in cold snow!
Image
This MERMAID was truly incredible under the lights!
Image
She is in the lower right.
The numerous fish swimming with her are breathtaking!

But WAIT!
There's MORE!

This startling work by Team Mongolia-Tserendash is: "BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE PROTECT THE EARTH FROM TODAY!"
Image
This work was voted "Artist's Choice" which is a high honor of respect from peers in the arts!
"The lizard on a human palm represents the inter-twindedness of humans with nature!".
Many colors were revealed as the light slowly changed every ten seconds or so.
Image
My personal favorite was the green/red seen here.

These sculptures will remain in the venue through the first week in February - OR - until the literally break down on warmer-than-freezing days!
Better get up there SOON or plan to go in 2018!

We plan to be there in 2018 and will bring the show to you!

Thanks, the BGR's

Thanx for the wonderful pix, BGR! I have friends coming in from the east coast the end of this week bound for Breck for some skiing. Hope the sculptures don't melt too soon! I gave them this site in case they want a preview.

Wow, thanks so much BGRs. Such a terrific topic and we enjoyed it a lot! It was almost like being there, but we were able to eat breaksfast at the same time :)

Fantastic picture as always, thanks so much for sharing. Great contrast of day vs night pics, we have only been up there in daytime, but always fun.

We saw them only in the day time. They are even cooler with the lights on. I wish we had seen them then too.
