Safeway has started their monopoly game again. Rather than pasting all those little pieces on the board, I created a spreadsheet to keep track of my tickets/markers like last time. I attached a blank spread sheet in both Excel and CSV formats if you want to play the game this way.

Monopoly Pattern (not important to know...)

Looking at the board with the right flap open, the 5 alphanumeric code starts with 8B on the flap, goes up and then starts at $5000 cash and goes counter clockwise around the board and ends at $1 million cash.

The code 9A starts in the right flap but goes down and then down the back of the flap.

The 3rd and 4th numbers start in the $1 million dollar cash, to the vacation home, and then around the board clockwise (by prize), then down the front flap and down the backflap.

Letters and numbers are both skipped (for example 8A does not exist) in the alphanumeric codes.

How to Use the Spreadsheet

You of course must first download either version of the spreadsheet and import it into your spreadsheet application.

The first column is the first two positions of each play area's code. For example, the $1 million dollar first play area code is 8Z01A which in the spreadsheet is 8Z.

The second column is how many play areas for that code's first two positions are needed to win. For example, row 8Z needs 8 play areas to win.

The next columns are labeled A through H. This corresponds to the last letter of each code. For example, 8Z01A would correspond to the A column of row 8Z.

For each Monopoly ticket you get at Safeway, put an x in each match of the first column and the corresponding letter for each marker (4 in each ticket) in the row. Keep ALL your tickets until the end of the game, just in case.

Winning a Prize

If you fill in the required number of play areas needed for a code in the spreadsheet, you won that prize.

If I win a prize (my spreadsheet shows I have the required number of markers for a particular number/letter prefix), I'll look through all my saved tickets and tear off the markers for the winning ticket and just paste those on my board.

Actually, it appears Safeway heard the complaints from last years Monopoly and is giving out small Instant Winner actual prizes - I won a donut and a yogurt already.

(if you see an error in the spreadsheet, please let me know. thanks)

Good luck, I hope one of us wins either of the $1 million dollar prizes.

For those of you who do not have or use a spreadsheet application, here's an image of the spreadsheet that you can print and keep track of your markers with a pen or pencil.

I haven't heard of that one yet. I had several that I won't use. Flowers, kids stuff and some kind of scrap book stuff. Food ones are: Lucerne 8 oz Brick Cream Cheese, 12 Oz Fresh Express Iceberg Garden Salad and 100 Count bottle of signature Care Aspirin 325 Mg.

I got that cooking one yesterday but haven't tried it yet. The hard to get tickets that Cook n Thyme listed earlier are the pieces that I need and will probably never see.

I looked at the cooking school thing. They wanted too much personal information. I won't do the shutterfly or fandango things either.

Yep my spreadsheet is all filled in except for the rare ones.

Last year I won lots of free stuff. This year nothing that I can use (pre-packaged "food", lots of free bagels and donuts, tons of Daisy sour cream, etc.) So I give those away to my gluten-eating, junk food eating and not so picky about food friends!
