Ok then why don’t king soppers. Safe. Put up a sign. Large one. Fire ban in effect. That just might. And I saw just might help.
Just saying.

I agree, that would be a responsible thing to do and in the community interest.

lets remember, some of our worst fires were started by a forest ranger, the state forest service, and teenage children of locals!

But to expect a retailer to not sell something, that is legal, because someone might use it in an illegal or careless manner, is just wrong!
Perhaps your efforts would be better received, and more productive to ask the retailers to post a sign by the fire wood, stating something like
"due to the current drought and dry conditions, Fire danger is very high! This and other counties have open burning restrictions in place. Please check before starting a camp fire.

You're trying to place liability where there is none, the person who started the illegal fire, the person who was careless, is the responsible party, no one else! In your mind, is the one who cut and packaged the wood also liable? What about the truck driver who delivered it?
Should there also be a ban on a business man who sells and delivers wood by the cord. What if some one was to use some of that wood to start a campfire that burned down your home?

What if the person buying the wood in going to their cabin/vacation home that has a perfectly safe legal wood cook stove or fire place. Maybe they're buying the wood because they don't want to use their chain saw when the fire danger is so high. You're asking the retailer to be our nanny! We didn't like that behavior with the magazines, but now you expect it?

:yeah that:

I can't believe people are so worried about this. How many forest fires have been started by someone buying wood at Kings? If someone wanted to be stupid enough to do illegal burning he/she would do it regardless if Kings sold firewood.
It is ridiculous to burden retailers to change their inventory based on ever changing fire restrictions in various areas. There is no way that they know how/why someone is buying wood that particular day and there certainly are many LEGAL uses for that wood (home, different area, future use, etc.)

I will agree. Most of the really bad fires up here were started by controlled burns that got out of control (eg North Fork that killed three people) or by Forest Service employees with a grudge (eg Hayman.) People need to be responsible. Fire bans are in place. Respect them.

Interesting you only mention those two. What about the Buffalo Creek (1996), High Meadow (1998 or 2000, can't remember which year), Snaking, and a few others that were person caused.

Dogrunner, I got on Pinecam during the Buffalo Creek Fire, 1995 in May if I remember correctly. We just all need to be responsible for our actions. So, Namaste.

yep- Kings sells wood. and lighter fluid. and lighters. and matches, too for God's sake. Maybe we should give ultimate control of flammables, ammunition, paint, chemicals, cleaners, engine oil to Kings, because they are in the best position to protect myself and the world from me- Our forefathers are spinning looking at us fools-

I think two of the three fires you mention, High Meadow, and Snaking, (if that is the one that started behind Platte Canyon High school) were started by careless smokers, locals. That's not to say that camp fires have not started their share of forest fires, but then so has God! That's not the point of this thread though, is it? It's about people wanting to stop businesses from selling fire wood! They want this to happen because they're afraid of wildfire! A rational fear, but an irrational reaction.
This attitude, that those of us that live up here are somehow more responsible with fire than the campers who come visit the forests, comes up almost every year, and it's just wrong.
We need to remember, we own a small piece of this paradise, but they own the rest of it along with us.
Campers and visitor to the mountains add a lot of money to our local economy, we should try to make them feel welcome, and want to come back!
We also need to become a lot more responsible ourselves. Teach our children not to smoke! but we also need to teach them how and why, to field strip a cigarette. Let them know we'd rather find out they'd tried smoking by finding the butt in a coke or beer can rather on the side of the road. If you see a neighbor, friend or stranger being irresponsible with fire, find a way to let them know.
