Conifer is located about 30 miles southwest of Denver and is right off US 285, making it a quick and easy drive to and from the city.

...'quick and easy'?.... A nice article though, with some interesting historic background.

Today, Conifer remains an easy escape out of the city without having to sit in I-70 traffic for hours.

Yep, US-285 is just a quiet mountain road with no traffic. So come on up.

Guess the author has never had to "sit in [US-285] traffic for hours".

I second that, Bobcat. Sit in Friday night traffic just once and you will change your opinion about a quiet drive with no traffic.

Just for a different perspective: A family friend moved last year from Idaho Springs to Wandcrest. She finds it rather funny that we complain about traffic on 285, and says it is heaven compared to the I-70 commute. I guess it is all down to what you are used to.

I understand what you are saying, but I have never felt like I was in heaven when I am sitting in traffic for two hours to just get home on a Friday night. I have even adjusted ny Friday hours so I leave work at 3:30 to avoid as much traffic as possible.

Yeah, its quiet and easy at 0230 Wednesday morning. Try it on a weekend or the dreaded big three, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day. It would be nice if they all stopped in Conifer but they don't. Rather than packing a sandwich to turn north on 285 on the weekends to get groceries I get all my supplies early in the week and hole up for the weekend now. I'd like to hack the warning signs near Morrison and Richmond Hill to say "Turn Around We're All Full Up."

US-285 is the new I-70 but with 2 lanes instead of 4.

The hills of Conifer have been drawing people for thousands of years.

The first to discover them were Arapaho, Ute and Cheyenne tribes who used the land as hunting grounds.

After they moved on, merchants, trappers, ranchers and miners moved in.

is that what they call it?

Sure, can't you see the "merchants, trappers, ranchers and miners" sitting on top of the hill at Windy Point waiting for them to "move on"? "Well, they're gone lets go".

That would be a great sign Snowy Owl. But I'd like the sign to display, "Closed to through traffic until further notice." :coffee screen:
