Great stories of Antarctica JTD, when I flew to McMurdo from Christchurch on one of the last C-141 flights, the load master was giving the briefing, and explained the toilet was a 50 gal drum with a curtain around it, it was funny to watch all the women on the flight slowly put their water bottles away after the briefing. McMurdo - "Fun drinking town with a bit of a science problem".

My young daughter and I lived for 7 or more years with only wood for heat and no running water. It was the only way we could afford to live in the mountains! You get very creative - bathing and washing hair in one gallon of water for example. We actually had a pony for a while, too, hauling hay and water for him. It gives you a great appreciation for the conveniences!

We just did a remodel 08/18 and it was six weeks. kitty litter toilet bucket and a battery operated camp shower outside.

We were both raised on farms so it was all good and worth it.

I've showered in creeks, #3 tubs, a pumphouse, an artesian well, and out of a 5 gallon bucket. It doesn't need a lot of water.

I agree. People have lived for centuries without toilets and showers. These "modern conveniences" are newcomers! Whenever I go camping, I bathe in the nearest creek or river. Here in the mountains, that is usually very refreshing! 8)

It's interesting where posts go sometimes. Like the man who knew of the blueberry farm near where I lived in Leaburg, Oregon, and shared his story of working and living in that part of the country (don't remember what that post was about). I love that people share their stories of where memories take them. Sorry I haven't responded - didn't get updates that people were posting. As of yesterday we have a working toilet (YEAH) and a shower with no curtain rod (the rod was missing the instructions - waaaahhhh). When I was young I lived out of a van for a short time and remember eating out of trash cans, so life can be tough, but we adapt. Thanks again for sharing your stories. I'll post pictures when it's done.

So it's done! YEAH! Thanks to my husband for all his hard work doing the plumbing (daily trips to the hardware), flooring, and installing everything. And thanks to my kind neighbor who built the vanity using an extra kitchen cabinet. We removed the drawers and used the drawer fronts for the doors. He cut the depth down to fit the space. He also built a mirror frame and I had the old beveled mirror cut for $5 (thanks Chris's Glass!). Sorry for all the whining. Good thread though. Here's some pics. My husband thinks the floor looks better than the painted plywood. What's your vote?
