Why You Really Do Need to Wash Avocados Before Eating Them

Quote:
The FDA issued a report earlier this month, urging consumers to think twice before eating or preparing avocado after compiling data that showed Listeria monocytogenes was found on 17 percent of avocado samples taken from 2014 to 2016. The bacteria was found on the skin of the avocados sampled, but 0.2 percent of avocados involved in the sampling contained flesh that also tested positive for listeria.

The FDA's report notes that all avocados should be washed before opening because bacteria can easily transfer from the skin to the knife, which can then contaminate the inside of the avocado you're preparing—and any other food you're working with.

17% is a fairly large percentage. I had no idea that I should be washing avocados when I use one but I sure will from now on.

you know I used to ONLY wash stuff, now I peel just about everything. I don't trust the poisons that could be in the skin not just on it. a shame because I was always told a lot of the nutrients were in the skin... well

I literally put a small amount of soap on the avocado, then rinse really well, then cut...soap binds with stuff, then carries it away....

I got to thinking about bananas, oranges, and cucumbers. Since I peel/skin these before eating, I have never washed these either. I wonder if they have the same problems as avocados. Or am I getting too paranoid about bacteria.

I do too Wily - I wash lemons, oranges, avocados, etc with dish washing soap.

If the knife is going to go through the skin and then into the fruit/veggie, it gets washed. I started that process with the cantaloupe crises a few years back. I also have a brush to wash cantaloupe since the outside is bumpy.

I even wash the fruits/veggies that I grow myself - I just don't think any of us can be too careful.
