We're going to be leaf-peeping in the Silverton (via 550) and Telluride (via Durango) areas at the end of September.

Any recommendations for roads an SUV could negotiate (it has 4WD but no LO range)?

Just a heads up. Be cautious about going down that way. They have been having huge landslides. My husband has been working down there and so far has been caught in 2 of them in just 3 weeks.

Oh! That's important to know. This is happening on the regular, paved roads?

Per CDOT at https://www.codot.gov/news/2016-news-re ... n-the-area
TRAFFIC UPDATE: CO Hwy 145 Open – Crews Still Working in the Area
August 23, 2016 - SAN MIGUEL COUNTY - The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) advises motorists to remain alert while driving along Colorado Highway (CO) 145 just west of Telluride.

The highway is open but motorists will encounter periodic delays while crews continue to remove mud and debris from the roads, ditches, and culverts.

Tyler Carlson, CDOT maintenance foreman said, “This last incident was not quite as significant; that’s because the work that has been done in the area over the past month and a half has really helped us prepare for additional rains. The culverts, which had been previously cleared out by crews, are working well and water is able to more efficiently run through them and under the road.”

CDOT has a ten-man maintenance crew with six pieces of heavy equipment working the area on CO 145 between Telluride and Saw Pit. Motorists can expect intermittent delays while work is being done from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday for the next two weeks.

Thanks for the information. We'll have to see if it dries out in the next couple of weeks.

Yes, I saw that. 8O

I see that was near Ouray . We could get to Silverton from either direction, though I was looking forward to taking 550 all the way down. Maybe it will dry out before we go.

You have to take 550 from Ouray to Silverton. It is spectacular. This is not normal and I'm sure it will be fine by the time you go.

I always look out the window of the aircraft when I fly over the western US. I flew over the San Juans (Red Mountain Pass) and over Lake City coming home on Saturday from a business trip. The San Juans were coated in white and many Aspens were adorned in thier autumn coloration already!!

That sounds beautiful, the exact thing I'm hoping to see.

Silverton up to Animas Forks is a great drive through a wide open valley...no 4WD needed. Good opportunity to see a lot of the 100+ year old mine buildings and there are a fair amount of aspen.

Another good option would be to head up to Yankee Boy Basin from Ouray...tight canyon with a lot of that opens up to a gorgeous valley surrounded by mountain peaks. Only the highest part of the basin might need 4WD

A few photos from last year. With the early cold this year peak color may come earlier than normal.

Between Ouray and Silverton
