Former beekeeper in Minnesota. What happens to them in cold weather is one of my favorite questions. Here's why.

Bees maintain a constant temperature in their hive. In the summer there are air-conditioner bees who flap their wings to move air in the hive. In the winter the bees form a large mass, a ball, and crawl over each other, the muscle contractions keeping each other warm. In the winter then a bee hive becomes essentially a warm-blooded animal.
