When one meets Platte Canyon High School teachers Steve Hanford and Kip Otteson, they come across as reasonable men and practical thinkers. Both are popular with students, and both are highly regarded as reputable and experienced educators in their respective fields.

Then you observe them together in the PCHS shop room, at 8,000 feet above sea level, in the middle of February, feverishly constructing a 40-foot-long boat consisting primarily of plywood, epoxy and fiberglass tape. Comparisons to Noah’s ark are almost unavoidable.

Upon further inquiry, the two men divulge (with straight faces) the specifics of their plan to fearlessly launch the vessel, with 13 students and five adults aboard, into the Pacific Ocean for a non-stop, 70-mile race slated to take somewhere between 30 to 40 hours to complete. ... 53729.html
