We have an elderly kitty, aged between 21-25 years old, (age discrepancy based on if she was 14 or 18 when we adopted her after her human mom passed away in June 2011)

Chipeta ( aka Petey) had become quite matted as she aged and was unable to groom properly. Our vet suggested trying cornstarch before the stress of a grooming visit. We applied the corn starch, and left if about 24 hours, it worked amazingly.

We still had to do some cutting, but wow, it loosened the matted hair great!

That's a great tip. When my cat Tonya got really older (like me), she also wasn't able to groom herself properly. At this point, she let me actually brush her and remove the big matts of hair. I always thought she felt better about herself after a brushing session as I thought she much preferred to look pretty and sleek. I wish I had known about the cornstarch idea way back then.

WOW! THat is an old kitty! you guys were (ARE) wonderful to take in an elderly kitty and obviously take such good care of her.

I keep 2 or 3 different brushes (from furmanators to slickers to nubby bristles to soft boar hair brushes for people) and now also combs by each kitty's bed so they get brushed a few times a day but just a little bit. It is something they love and keeps them mat free. Now as the older ones get meds, I also do it after I squirt something in their mouth as a thank you.

Great tip, thanks ColoradoSunshine and for giving Petey a loving home, she sure is a old lady :) Nice photo, she looks very comfortable and content.
