When I was in high school I volunteered for our shelter. It was a fun job most of the time. Yes, we did euthanize some of the animals and no, it wasn't fun, but, it was done by injection which was very fast and painless. We didn't make it a practice to put down healthy animals and they were well fed (I fed them).

Actually, Luna, it was so peaceful a death and they were either very old or not socialized or sick that it really didn't bother me too much. I loved the fact that it was so peaceful. No crying, no howling, no nothing, it was like they just went to sleep. That training has made it easier for me to put my own very sick animals to sleep. Keep in mind I said sick animals....very sick and the best thing to do for them was to euthanize them.

It does have the hint of PETA, but it is so true. I have had friends and family members die and I never really cared but it took about 6 months to get over having to put both my dog down. There is no human I would shed a tear over losing, but an animal....

lunachick, I am sorry because I hate PETA. As a life long animal lover and promoter of responsible ownership, I cannot subscribe to their outright propaganda. They are radical hypocrites, and use 'letters' like this to stir up supporters. Excuse my bluntness but you did ask. :)

Hey guys, I wasn't giving anyone grief for posting the article or ruin the mood of the thread, it just seemed a bit overdone. Chocolove seemed to have a more realistic experience with the job. Not that anyone couldn't feel that way, but that letter just doesn't seem like it was written by a real person in the business.
And Lunachik, thanks for the diagnosis but I think for myself, and I don't believe everything I read. Or at least I am skeptical until I see more supporting facts. Putting down an animal should never be an easy thing, and I agree that there are too many pets in the penitentiary, so to speak...

Educate me Luna. I too am brainwashed, and undereducated as to their mission. All I know is to many celebrity endorsements and throwing paint on people wearing fur. What do they accomplish? How many no kill shelters do they subsidize? What are your shoes or belt made of?

...and what about fire bombing labratories and the dumpster full of dead dogs that were supposed to be in their care...
