I just found out today My beloved German Shepard has this genetic disease. He is 3 years old this month. It's very bad , our wonderful Vet has him on antibiotics and has recommended surgery . She is still not sure if he will heal and continue on. He also has to be neutered for this to even have a chance to heal. I guess what I am asking is if anyone has had a pet with this disorder and what the out come was for you. As much as I hate to admit to myself I am wondering if I should put him down. He is in so much pain and can barely do a thing . I don't know if I should put him through this torture since the healing time ( if at all) could take months and months. I was also contemplating contacting the breeder I bought him and his sister from and demanding my money back , possibly using this large amount of money to cover his medical bills. Either way I am going to deal with this breeder , she assured me verbally and with paper that there were no genetic disorders in this breed and she needs to contact the people she sold these dogs too and let them know of this disorder. His sad eyes say to me I want to live, but His sad eyes also say to me I am in so much pain.. I am so lost and hurt I just had a Shep die, and BO was my replacement for that pain...

Snapper, I am so sorry for you and your dogs. I googled this condition and boy, does it sound absolutely miserable for both dog and owner. I clicked on the first topic on the page, there is A BUNCH of information out there, treatments, support, etc...Please do some research before taking drastic measures. By all means get in touch with the breeder. Please keep us informed on how things progress. Keeping you and your pups in my thoughts and prayers. Jo Miller

I also Googled the condition and noticed it seems related to the immune system. Really feeling for you, it's miserable when one of the kids is sick.

Wish I could be of more support and help. Mainly just wanted to remind you that you didn't do anything wrong -- your pup knows you care about him -- and we're here if you need us.

Wow! She assured you of that, verbally and in writing? Man, the GSD has loads of genetic issues, there is not any way that she could guarantee against all of the genetic issues that GSD could have. Good Luck, on a few of the websites that I saw it looks like you can treat this and have infected tissue and the anal glands removed with high chance of success, I would opt of a second opinion on treatment and go to a specialist.
