That is interesting.
My niece was studying in Greece a few years ago and packs of stray dogs wander the streets on the outskirts of the town where she was living. She sent me photos and there was a double nosed puppy among the dogs. They were all mixed breed strays and this pup had litter mates that had single noses. I thought it was a random genetic defect. The pup didn't appear to have difficulty eating, which would have indicated a clefted pallet. If I can dig up the picture I will post it.

The town was Corinth and I found the picture. Of course he is a black faced puppy and I can't make out his double nose in the photo, but I have an antique monitor and photo program. But maybe those of you with newer technology can see if he does in fact have two noses.

Hey Jo, if you click on the picture, it takes you to a bigger image where you can see the two noses. What a cute puppy, he looks like a border collie mix. Wonder if that is a genetic defect or if he has some of the Andean tiger blood in him.

Thanks for sharing the pic.

Hi, bdogsgal. I know the pic enlarges but I can't see his noses or much else of the detail of his face. It's just my dated equipment, some day I will upgrade...

When I read the link in your post it mentioned that the Andean dogs gene pool came from Spain. I theorize that this nose thing, is in fact a genetic defect that some dogs live with and as with any physical trait it can be exploited by breeding for it. As can coat type, coloring, body or leg length, other nose traits that are obvious in pugs, bull dogs and collies.
I think this puppy's nose was random. It is sad that stray dog packs are just a common and unremarkable aspect of life in some European and Asian countries, like road side weeds or birds in trees.

I saw on the news that our local Camp Bow Wow (they have a web site and a link to adopting "Greekies") went to Greece and got stray dogs out of the country, much to the dismay of Greek tourism. They don't want any flack about what we Americans perceive as cruelty and would just as soon not have this publicized.

There was a calf born exactly like that recently. I feel bad for them because it can be difficult to function... but I can't imagine getting used to the sight of that.
