Has anyone tried growing asparagus up here (not in a greenhouse)? Were you successful?

I've been growing it for 3 years outside. You're not supposed to eat it for the first couple years.
We did harvest some last year, it has spread.

I've been growing it for years up here & it comes back year after year. Until last year when the gophers/voles got into it. So I'm replanting a bunch of new roots this year & hoping the critters have moved on.

Thanks for the replies -- and the critter warning. I read that deer don't like it so much, but I forgot about gophers/voles. I guess I'll have to build a garden bed with hardware mesh at the bottom. Glad to hear that the asparagus will grow well here!

Spray around your garden with a mixture of 1 part liquid dish detergent (not the kind that kills microbes) 1 part household ammonia and 1 part water. It fertilizes the plants and the vols/gophers hate it because it irritates their skin. They will go visit your neighbors then. I use a hose sprayer. I got this from the Forrest Service

Thanks ferdnand! We planted asparagus the year we moved in (2012) and have been harvesting for a couple years now. Bought it from Tatonka Farms. Will try the vole/critter deterent :applause:

Yes, thank you for the plant deterrent recipe.

How often do you spray? I have my veggie beds well protected but my perennial flower bed gets ravished every year by pocket gophers.

I planted asparagus last year. I can't wait to see it emerge this year. Then in 2019 I might be able to harvest some spears!

Like a friend of mine says, "To plant a garden is to believe in the future!"

True, but deer will try most anything, especially in drought years. I'd still be prepared to give it some protection.

I normally spray about 3 times per summer. All of my voles have gone to visit my neighbors now.

For the detergent... would this be like Dawn, Palmolive, etc? Or the liquid 'dishwasher' detergent? Thx... I've tried everything else possible... hope this works for me too.
