The wife wants sod to surround new patio. I am very hesitant, due to water required, & how hot it's been & our acidic soil. Anyone have any input for choice of sod- kentucky bluegrass?- Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Mike

Hi - I installed a large amount of Kentucky blue grass about 15 years ago... still looks great minus forgetting to give the [female dogs] their grass pills. How do you grow grass up here - I'm at 8600. First off north slope is a must. Second we have a creek in the back yard so a lot of alluvial soil around the yard and third and most important - you must till and mix synthetic water absorption pellets into the ground soil. Dry there the size of rice - watered they increase to an ice cube in size. This is the only way the grass has a chance in our dry conditions.

I still have a large bag of the pellets and can give all you need to get started.

One of the HAGS (High Altitude Gardening Society) had sod installed - she is at the same altitude as me, 8,200 ft. She also had a watering system installed at the same time.

Her grass is absolutely beautiful after several years.

I do not know what kind of grass she had installed. It is not a fine leaf grass but not as coarse as rye grass.

I did use a grass mixture from the non-defunct Evergreen Nursey that had blue grass in it. While some of the mixture survived, the blue grass did not. But I do not water my grass at all.

Water is probably the most vital part! But you need to have a domestic well permit to do any outdoor watering. If your well is household use only, out door watering is not allowed, unless you can buy additional water rights.

Technically, A domestic well permit is needed to water farm animals. I purchased water rights for up to 5 horses and to water a small garden (12x12). https://www.waterinfo.org/rights.html. I hired an attorney and it was a couple year process.

If my wife ordered sod before I was ready, I would not be happy, I seeded what you see here with the intent that if it didn't take, I would sod, I got this in 2 years, from seed at Aspen Park hardware. It's my 19th green...
