I just received an inquiry regarding when to pick ripen tomatoes.

Pick them AS SOON AS they are ripe. DO NOT let them hang on the vine, because they'll lose flavor (very rapidly), get mushy and it tells the plant it can stop growing now.

Picking stimulates the growth of more blossoms, particularly for indeterminate varieties and it stimulates the ripening of the green tomatoes.

If you want maters to make sauce and/or to can/freeze then you should grow determinate varieties.

But for better success in our environment and for a longer picking season grow indeterminate varieties.
