I searched for a new Medicare physician a few months ago, after the physician I was seeing at Conifer Medical Center left the practice. I was told by Conifer Medical Center that her former patients would only be given appointments with PA's, which was not acceptable to me.

I am a retired RN and prefer to see a physician who is board certified in Internal Medicine. After reviewing a number of physicians on line (both Medicare site and hospital physician directories) I found a physician I like near Littleton Hospital. He is with South Suburban Internal Medicine at 7750 S Broadway. His name is Richard Barnett, D.O.

I like Dr. Barnett because he is very willing -- is in fact insistent -- on including his patients in all aspects of their medical care. I also like that he does not automatically choose to prescribe medication for his patients' problems, but rather first looks at other options that may help.

I've only seen Dr. Barnett twice, but I am pleased with his care. His office number is 303-347-9912.

Thanks for the recommendation, bjmpmm. I too am not pleased with Conifer Medical. I had Dr. Erica Smith as my doctor and when she left, I was also told I did not have an assigned doctor there anymore and could only see a PA. I did just have my Medicare Wellness appointment with one of the PAs since that is really a nothing appointment but if I have a problem, I too much prefer a doctor.

I guess since Conifer Medical now has a monopoly on the doctor situation up here, they can do stuff like this.

Tillerbee, Dr. Smith was also my doctor at Conifer Medical. I have no problem with seeing a PA for minor things, but would not want to see one as my regular provider. Plus, as a senior citizen, I feel that an internal medicine specialist is an advantage over a family practice provider. I'm happy with my decision to leave Conifer Medical behind and head down the hill for the care I need.

I had Dr Smith also. This is frustrating, I realize the drs there can't take all her patients but assumed we would be placed with the next dr filling the space of Dr Smith. The PA did a great job with my unusual ailment though so please cut them some slack. They have a great deal of training and will ask a dr if they are unsure of something.

chakraz, I do not need to give the PAs "some slack". They may be good at what they do, the one I saw was.

But to be told by Conifer Medical Center, after I had been with them for years, that ig I need to see a doctor, I need to call and see which doctor may have an opening that day or in a couple or few days. I get no choice of which doctor I can see.

To me, this is not acceptable and the consequences of a business decision made by the owners of Conifer Medical Center. How would I establish a "working relationship" or better yet a "medical history relationship" with any doctor there?

When I was trying to decide about Medicare supplemental insurance, there were 2 internal medicine physicians who were accepting new Medicare patients at New West Physicians in Evergreen. That was in May, so I don't know if that's still the case. I decided to stay with Kaiser for now, which has a clinic in Evergreen and I have a physician. It's tough to find doctors who accept Medicare. I don't think people should have to compromise when the insurance companies make $8000 (or more) for taking new Medicare patients.

When I was choosing my Medicare supplement 3 years ago, the doctors at New West in Evergreen were only accepting a certain HMO supplement - can't remember the name. Prior to retirement, I had seen an internal medicine physician in that practice but since they didn't take the supplement we chose, I had to find someone else. Medicare means lots of decisions -- including what to do for Part D (prescription drug coverage). I guess figuring it all out helps keep our minds sharp! :)

Sorry Tillerbee, meant no sarcasm. I am not happy with this situation either and feel what the clinic has done is a poor way to handle patients left out when their dr leaves. Pinecam is so touchy lately I am reluctant to comment on anything. Tired of being snapped at, this is my last post. Bye all.

Yes, it does depend on your ins. carrier. If you contact them, they may be able to give you names of local Medicare drs. I wish you luck.

As I understand the marketplace then and now: The medicare insurance carrier that NewWest worked with was Rocky Mountain HMO, which is a Colorado based HMO; however, the network can be sparse in some areas of the state. I for want don't want my choice of physicians/hospitals limited to a narrow network (fewer providers) should I need specialized care. United HealthCare subsequently purchased RM HMO...thus the options for Medicare supplements expanded here in Colorado...that is because AARP contracts with United HealthCare to provide supplements for Medicare to its members, which is a substantial number of the age 65+ that belong to AARP

Hope this information is helpful to this audience.
