How long should health insurance and long term care statements be saved after a parent passes away? My mother was very sick before she passed (9 yrs ago) and I have thousands of pages of documentation from health and LTC insurance and providers, home care, hospice etc. I paid all outstanding bills and haven't heard anything regarding any more bills for years now. While I understand that I should keep the diagnosis and other documents relevant to a complete "family medical history", can an insurance company come back, claim they made a mistake in their figuring and I should keep all these statements to prove otherwise? I looked on the Internet and some websites say keep 3 yrs and some say never throw them away. I appreciate your thoughts on the matter.

I believe there is a statute of limitations in all states on collecting medical bills but I don't know what it is. You might check.

Hey are the statutes of limitations for the State of Colorado. You should be able to find your answer here:
