Hi everyone & Happy Sunday!
I joined PineCam today specifically to address the curiosity of everyone as to what this "appliance" is! I do have to admit, that I totally laughed at the mention that this could be a drone!
I have worked in the Operating Room for nearly 20 years, and have seen many many many of these end up underneath patients recovering from surgery because... This little plastic piece is part of the mask that your Anesthesia Provider (The Dr, or Anesthesia Assistant, or Certified Nurse Anesthetist) holds to your face as you are going "under" Anesthesia... This particular plastic piece is part of the mask... see the link, hopefully it attaches! http://www.a-msystems.com/p-54-adult-face-masks.aspx
This plastic piece does nothing of value ASIDE from falling off the mask every.single.time, for almost every.single.patient. It falls off because, as the anesthetic is taking effect, the mask gets taken away from your face & taken apart for the intubation tube that goes in it's place. Your Anesthesia provider "should" do a better job of locating all these pieces so they don't migrate & end up under their patients.
It would have been helpful if, while you got moved to your stretcher after surgery, that someone had checked that there was NOTHING under you, as these can create some nasty skin issues if you lay on them too long.. As Wily Fox AKA Angela mentioned above, it can seriously gouge & potentially break skin. This issue alone is a major thing that hospitals & surgery centers are very concerned with.
We never want to think that our patients left our facility with a skin breakdown that was caused by something aside from surgery.. It might actually be helpful to contact the facility where your surgery happened, and let them know that this was under you when you woke up. We do take that kind of issue seriously!
Hope your recovery from Ventral Hernia surgery is going well and hope this info was helpful for all that were curious...
