Hi Guys,

I just found out that I might have to have surgery to repair a hernia. My insurance company has informed me that St. Anthony is not "in network", so my choices are:

1. Lutheran in Wheat Ridge

2. Swedish in Denver

Do you guys know anything about these two facilities? Which would you choose?

Thanks!

I have been in both. Both are quite good. But as shallow as this sounds, I would pick Lutheran as they offer valet parking if you like, or you can hoof it yourself (yes, a long distance). I am aware Swedish does also but the line up for a driver is usually quite long on the ramp. Yeah, I now. Shallow.

I was just in Swedish a few weeks ago. My only real complaint was that some medical people would come into the room and say they were going to bring me something and then wouldn't. It happened so many times that it became almost laughable and when the charge nurse came in with a type of survey of how my stay was going, I told her about the problem (she was one the people that promised something and then forgot about it-twice). I will say that after that conversation, everyone was more attentive and they didn't forget anymore and I felt like they really listened and tried extremely hard to correct any problem I had, including a follow up by a higher up person then the charge nurse the next day. I'm a very pleasant patient, was not difficult to care for and I didn't ask for the majority of the items or requests that were promised and then forgotten. However, the rest of the care was excellent, and I have nothing but good things to say about the nurses there and the doctors and assistants that treated me. They were top notch. Good luck with your surgery and hospital stay.

I've been in both. I'd give an edge to Swedish.

I had a surgery in 2008; was in CCU due to extreme blood loss in 2013 (did not know ulcers could bleed), and have had EDG's for the ulcer at Swedish hospital. I love the folks there. The staff is very professional, friendly, caring and quick to attend to your needs, when you need them. When they were giving me meds, I'd ask what each was for and they explained so I could understand. I did not like the way one of the meds was working (made me feel like I was on a roller-coaster). I asked to be removed from it and they (of course followed up with the Dr.) and gave me something different. I highly recommend them. And, when it came that I needed a payment plan to pay off my co-pay for the surgery, the accounting dept was just as caring and helpful to work one out (to me that is just as important as well.)

Just my 2 cents worth.

Best of luck on your surgery.

Sounds like your overall experience was good! It is reassuring to know that people can come out of the hospital with good things to say about the staff and facilities.

It's awesome that they listened to you! Sometimes you feel like nobody pays attention!

Who's your surgeon? To me, that should be the criterium upon which you select the hospital since many have privileges at more than one location. Next would be the staff and care. Most hernia repairs are done on an outpatient basis anymore, meaning you probably won't ever see a room unless there are complications or extenuating circumstances.

For my own hernia repair, I chose Porter and a surgeon I should have vetted more carefully. Three months and several additional 'procedures' later I am in far, far worse shape than before the first surgery. Sick and in pain pretty much most of the time now, I'll never go back to that facility and I have absolutely no faith in, and refuse to do one more followup with, the surgeon.

The size of the room, parking, food, or most anything else should be the very least important criteria. Careful and competent care at the front end should take precedence over everything else. Ask me how I know this.

Best of luck with your surgery!
