Charles C. (Charley) Royal, on right, and Mrs. Charmetella Royal, left, at the entrance to the first 'Royal Ranch'.
The original Ranch was located on what later became the K-Z Ranch, owned by Otto and Simeone Kuhler.
The unpaved road on the right is Park County Rd. 43, and Mt. Logan's 'Horsehoe' is recognizable in the upper left .

This building later burned down, and Charley moved up the valley to the second Royal Ranch, located below the present 43/47 split.

Charley Royal, right, in half-jersey, spars with George Caligny (sp?),
whom, I was told, was the Park County Sheriff at the time.

Image

Chas. Royal, right, pauses to speak with a 'City Feller', possibly a banker,
while constructing a guest cabin. Guest cabin has yet to receive, among other things, its 'chinking'.

Same fellow, and Chas. Royal, right, at another guest cabin. Rain gutters may be added later.

From the approach to Royal Ranch, the staff and guests await new arrivals.
At the time of these photos, Charley and Charmetella offered visitors private cabins or lodge rooms, home-cooked meals in the dining hall, horseback pleasure rides and, in season, excellent hunting and fishing. During Deer and Elk season, Charley usually had a number of bookings as guide/outfitter.

Great photos!

Have you made them available to the Park County Local History Archives for preservation? There will be no requirement to turn over the originals, they will only need to scan them at high res and get a "permission to use" form from you. It a great way to preserve some of Park County's heritage and make them available for others to learn from.

Thanks, friends! I'm glad I could share some of the old Deer Creek Valley history with my fellow PineCammers!
I've got some more b &w photos to post, and some other images, including a rare 'Empire Magazine' color cover to scan and post. (Empire Magazine was a newsprint 'magazine'-format Sunday-only publication of the Denver Post, BITD.)

Jim: Glad you liked the photos...I had a second CD prepared, and I'd be glad to send it to the Park County Local History Archives at P.O. Box 99 in Fairplay. My pleasure...Thanks for the address!

I'll see if I can't take some decent photos, to scan and post, of a few Native American artifacts that Charley found on his properties along Deer Creek...

Empire Magazine was my favorite part of the Sunday papers - I miss it greatly.

40coupe,

Fantastic pictures! I have a website dedicated to creating a national database of personal history. The concept is to have individuals share their personal history and photos creating a searchable database for all to enjoy. I would really appreciate you signing up and contributing your photos and the history surrounding them.

Heck, I neglected to point out some details in Photos 1, 2 & 6...in Photo 1, the small sign at the right side of the gateposts reads 'Cabins For Rent', 'Good Fishing _ Beaver Dams inq. Royal Ranch'.

Photo 2: Just beyond the chickens is a pine wood 'gazebo', covering a well and pump. Curved pump handle is barely visible. That is Chas. Royal, wearing fedora hat, on the far side of the phaeton motorcar. Notice the person, obviously walking very quickly, just to the right of the gazebo, wearing a dark hat?

Photo 6: That's Chas. Royal, again, wearing the same pair of chaps as in Photo 1, on the balcony, with his left leg over the railing.

Will post some more, soon! Thx!
