Today we saw a big flock of large white birds flying in V formation over Loveland ski area. They were probably at 15,000 feet or so. Several lines of them, maybe 50 or 60 birds total. Anyone know what these could be? They looked like geese other than they were pure white. I was thinking pelicans or snow geese, but it could be something else. Ideas?

Most likely pelicans. Flocks have occasionally been known to rest up on Evergreen Lake.

Could easily be snow geese.

Cranes were my first thought, too.

i heard the warbling and was looking all around and finally as it got louder, i saw the v pattern and confirmed sandhill cranes with my binocs - and another line of them passed, and another v formation
this happened oct 24th
if the birds you saw were close enough to see the white, you would have seen that they were not the sandhills - but if they were far enough away, they may have appeared white, or light colored -

We saw a flock of sandhills over Conifer yesterday afternoon. There was about 25 of them.

I heard some off of South Turkey Creek. Such a fun, exciting sound. Are they headed south through Monte Vista, you think?

Mostly. They are ultimately headed for Bosque del Apache in New Mexico, where they winter.

We are planning a trip there. Last time, there were also 60,000 Snow Geese. Deafening at dawn! 8)

It is a wonderful place. And Socorro now has some decent lodging and really good restaurants.
We always take the backroads south to the Bosque. Beautiful, rural country and villages.
We have seen Roadrunners and javelina, tons of raptors, and kazillions of amazing water fowl.
The songbird feeding stations at the Visitor Center will keep you busy for hours. :O)
Yum! I wanna go....
